Christopher King attended the World Cup Finals in Lyon – just as another, very special character of the show jumping world –  Baloubet du Rouet.

The presentation of Baloubet du Rouet, the greatest living show jumper and three times winner of the World Cup with Rodrigo Pessoa , organised  by the Selle Francais and based on a dramatic idea by “yours truly “,  was one of the big and moving moments of the weekend.

When Signor Diogo Pereira Coutinho , the owner of Baloubet received the flattering invitation from Bernard Le Courtois, president of the Selle Francais  stud book to bring his 25 year old super star horse to Lyon he replied,

“How could I refuse such a charming letter!”

Not only did the great old stallion, the number one sire in the world for the last two years, thanks to such great horses as Paloubet d’Halong, travel in style with his own vet, rider, groom, staff and members of the Coutinho family, but his 93 year old proud Portugese owner offered 50,000 € prize money to the best product of Baloubet jumping in the World Cup events.

As Baloubet galloped into the Lyon arena to a thunder of applause he looked like he was ready to win his fourth World Cup title with the veins on his neck shining on his polished chestnut coat.

When Ludger Beerbaum won the 3 star Grand Prix in style just minutes before the presentation with his top Baloubet son Chaman ,owned by Madeleine Wintershulz , the scenario could not have been better.

The buzz around the warm up arena when fans saw this incredible horse, some for the first time, was that they couldn’t believe his incredible condition. They even thought it was one of his sons.

As he galloped into the Lyon arena to a thunder of applause he looked like he was ready to win his 4th World Cup title with the veins on his neck shining on his polished chestnut coat. Helped by his pretty grand daughter, the obviously moved Mr Coutinho was honoured by the SF stud book, along with his fabulous stallion for having kept Baloubet in such top physical form and beauty.

A big merci to the team of girls from the Selle Francais office who put together  a truly stunning presentation and a moment to remember. Bernard Le Courtois main goal as president of the Selle Francais stud book over these past two years was to “Up” the image of the grand French breed and to show off the talent and history of the SF horse at an international level.

With only a month to go before he steps  down, we can say that his mission was accomplished . Thanks to such great horses as Monsieur Baloubet

THE SHOW

The show had its  ups and downs. That’s horse business !

Organizing any event on Easter weekend is always a challenge. Family time, lots of amateur shows, holidays..The final was packed but the other three days had a few empty seats. You can also blame live TV and streaming now available to pretty much everyone in the comfort of their own home or horse club.

GL events, one of the worlds best organizers with a top quality exhibition centre  in Lyon who always put on a classy show, pulled out all the stoppers. Everything looked perfect and ran like clockwork . Thanks to the masterful hand of its mistress Sylvie Robert and her team. A good size trade fair with all of the best horsey brands , a poney show and of course in the main arena the FEI Longines World Cup and a 2 and 3 star horse show. So anyone who bothered to come got a lot for their entrance fee !

I do not think that I have ever tasted such delicious food served at the VIP tables at any horse show. Two star Michelin Lyonnaise cuisine and wonderful Burgundy wines washed down all of the stress and excitement leading up to the magnificent final round and the beautiful victory for the handsome, charming and talented German rider Daniel Deusser and his Cornet d’Amour.

Charlotte du Jardin proved that she really is the new princess of dressage with a flawless and emotional demonstration.

The worst  scenario for  our friend and rider Patrice Delaveau having to retire with Lacrimoso being in the lead after the first 2 rounds because of a sprain……  so the mood in our camp was very low.

Charlotte du Jardin proved that she really is the new princess of Dressage with a flawless and emotional demonstration. The only couple who really told a story helped along by a stirring musical orchestration.

THE FASHION

As for the hot horsey fashion looks …..I was pretty disappointed by what was on show. Country weekend casuals, your usual jeans and polos and of course a lot of grey suits for the judges and staff. Not a lot to inspire me.

But I did notice one real trend that is becoming big business in horse fashion and equipment ……

Hot flashy colours !

One real trend that is becoming big business in horse fashion and equipment …… Hot flashy colours !

Punky pinks, glowy greens, bizzy blues and yummy yellows. Crazy colour was seen all over the World Cup final trade fair. From an ever orange chic Hermes poncho to a simple fluo fuschia horse bucket.

Traders everywhere told me that their biggest sales for accessories, covers, belts and bags were in these new day glow colours.

Well they didn’t need to convince me . I have always  been a fan of fun fashion colour clashes. All you need to brighten a damp, cold and gloomy Normandy winter! Or to splash along the boardwalk this summer at Deauvilles beach in between the events at the nearby World Equestrian Games venues for Normandy 2014 !
